What's Missing From My Gaming Garden?

We hear a lot about the over-saturation of entertainment, with repeated settings, styles, and character types making us all long for something a little different.  In other words, we're all so sick of Nazis, zombies, and post-apocalyptic wastelands that we are yearning for  alternatives.  So I thought we should take this opportunity to think about what exactly we want to see instead of the usual.  What overlooked scenarios are most deserving of becoming the next great interactive experience?  I have a few that I'd like to see.

First up, I'd like to see more from the "off brand" mythologies of history.  We have seen a shit-ton of content from the Greeks and Romans, and even the Norse have had their spotlight from time to time.  But what about the Gaelic and Gaulish?  What about the Sumerians and Babylonians?  What about the ancient Egyptians?  Most regions of the world have had well thought out and developed mythologies, each with its own unique stories.  I'd like to see more of them brought to life and explored.

Next, I'd like to see more from the mad scientists.  Mad Scientists were all the rage in cheesy '50s sci/fi, but gaming has only had a few that really qualify in the genre.  But why so little?  Mad scientists are a great approach to show man's infinite capabilities and imaginations, as well as the inherent ability to overreach our goals in ways we cannot account for.  Aside from a handful of games to touch on this archetype, gaming on the whole has largely ignored it, and I think it's about time for a comeback.

And finally, I'd like to see a game that can show me a vision of the future unlike anything we have seen before.  When I was a kid, the future was something to be dreamed about, but it seems like these days everyone is having the same dreams.  Our vision of the future has been stifled, and we are in desperate need of imagination.  Show me a world that isn't run on oil.  Show me a world that's not run by robots.  Show me a world where people have accomplished more than we could ever have dreamed of, yet they are still dreaming.  Show me the future the Jetsons would have been jealous of.

What about you?  What settings, styles, etc. would you like to see make waves in the gaming world?  Sound off below.
